Stay Aware, Stay Safe: A Guide to Avoiding K.O.-Tropfen

🚨 1. Call emergency services immediately

If you suspect intoxication by an unknown substance, especially if the person is older or symptoms appear suddenly:

→ Call emergency services right away (112 in the EU).

Tell them:

The person’s age

Symptoms (confusion, sudden sedation, collapse, breathing issues, etc.)

Approximate time symptoms started

What they drank / situation (if known)

Even mild symptoms can worsen rapidly, especially in older adults.

🧍‍♂️ 2. Stay with the person — do NOT leave them alone

K.O.-Tropfen symptoms can progress quickly.
Stay close and watch for:

Difficulty breathing

Slow or irregular pulse

Vomiting

Loss of consciousness

If you’re in a public place, ask someone nearby to help.

😵 3. Keep them awake and responsive (if possible)

If they are still conscious:

Speak calmly

Encourage them to keep talking

Keep them sitting upright

Reassure them that help is coming

Do not shake them.
Do not give food, alcohol, or more liquids.

🤢 4. If they become unconscious, use the recovery position

If the person is unresponsive but breathing:

1. Gently roll them onto their side.

2. Tilt their head back slightly to keep airways open.

3. Bend the top leg to stabilize their position.

4. Monitor breathing carefully.

This reduces the risk of choking on vomit.

🫁 5. If they stop breathing, begin CPR

If you know how to perform CPR:

Start chest compressions immediately

Follow emergency operator instructions

If you don’t know CPR:

The emergency operator will guide you step-by-step.

🍺 6. Preserve evidence — but don’t confront anyone

If it’s safe:

Keep their drink or glass

Note the location and time

Avoid touching or cleaning items unnecessarily

Do not accuse or confront anyone—your priority is safety.

🧊 7. Avoid common mistakes

Do NOT:

Give coffee or stimulants

Try to induce vomiting

Let them “sleep it off”

Put them in cold water or shower

Leave them alone in a taxi or room

These can worsen sedation or trigger shock.

🛡️ 8. After they stabilize

When they wake up:

They may have amnesia, confusion, or fear.

Keep communication calm and simple.

Encourage them to get medical evaluation and, if appropriate, involve police.
